The McLaren F1 GTR is the racing version of the legendary McLaren F1 road car, designed by Gordon Murray. Created in 1995 at the request of private clients and racing teams, the GTR was adapted for GT racing while retaining the 6.1-liter BMW V12 engine, with power limited to around 600 hp to comply with regulations.
Its debut was sensational: at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, the F1 GTR achieved overall victory on its first attempt, beating more specialized prototype race cars. The winning team was Kokusai Kaihatsu Racing, with drivers Lehto, Sekiya, and Dalmas. Other F1 GTRs finished in the top five, proving the car’s dominance.
Further evolutions followed in the next seasons: in 1996, the GTR received aerodynamic upgrades with a new “long tail” body, lower and more streamlined, to improve high-speed stability. In 1997, additional updates tried to keep up with increasingly extreme competition, but the GT category was rapidly evolving.
The McLaren F1 GTR remains famous for winning Le Mans with a GT car derived from a road model—an almost unrepeatable feat that has secured its place as a motorsport legend.
