The Lancia Delta S4 is one of the most iconic and legendary rally cars in history, a key player in one of the most exciting eras of the World Rally Championship (WRC). The Delta S4 was developed by Lancia in 1985 to compete in the new Group B category, a regulation that allowed for extremely powerful and technologically advanced cars.
The Delta S4 featured a 1.8-liter turbo engine with a supercharger and turbocharger system (a unique hybrid), producing around 500 hp in its racing version. The all-wheel drive and lightweight design (only 890 kg) gave it outstanding performance, especially on challenging terrains like snow and gravel.
In 1986, the Delta S4 reached its peak, winning the Monte Carlo Rally and several other events, contributing to Juha Kankkunen and Markku Alén’s success in the WRC. However, its career was brief and tragically cut short: during the Corsica Rally that same year, a fatal crash involving driver Attilio Bettega led to the end of Group B racing.
Today, the Lancia Delta S4 is one of the most sought-after rally cars by collectors, symbolizing an era of innovation and extreme speed.
