The Ferrari 412 P is one of the most fascinating and rare sports prototypes of the 1960s. Introduced in 1967, it was developed as a customer-racing version closely related to Ferrari’s legendary works 330 P4. The 412 P combined the technical foundations of the earlier 330 P3 with the bodywork, suspension and alloy wheels of the new P4. Power came from a 3,967 cc V12 engine equipped with six Weber carburettors, producing approximately 420 hp. With a weight of less than 900 kg, the car was capable of approaching 300 km/h.
Unlike the works 330 P4, which featured three-valve cylinder heads and Lucas fuel injection, the 412 P retained two-valve cylinder heads and carburettors. This simpler configuration was particularly suited to Ferrari’s customer teams, making the car easier to operate and maintain while retaining formidable performance. Only four Ferraris were produced in 412 P specification. Two were created by upgrading existing 330 P3 chassis, while the other two were built directly to the new specification. This exceptionally limited production makes the 412 P one of Ferrari’s rarest and most valuable competition cars.
The 412 P emerged during the legendary Ferrari–Ford rivalry in the World Sportscar Championship. Its most celebrated achievement came at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, where Ferrari secured a historic one-two-three finish, with the 412 P following the two works 330 P4s. The spectacular formation finish provided Ferrari with a memorable response to Ford’s victory at Le Mans the previous year. During the 1967 season, the 412 P also appeared in several major international endurance races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it was entered by prestigious Ferrari customer teams. Although reliability could sometimes fall short of its impressive performance, the 412 P was capable of competing at the highest level against formidable rivals such as Ford, Porsche and Chaparral. Today, the Ferrari 412 P is regarded as one of the finest representatives of endurance racing’s golden era. Combining breathtaking beauty, immense performance and sophisticated engineering, it possessed proportions that remain almost universally admired. Its extreme rarity, close relationship with the iconic 330 P4 and prominent role in the Ferrari–Ford rivalry have made the 412 P one of the most desirable and valuable racing cars ever produced.
