The Lancia 037 is one of the most legendary rally cars of all time, a true symbol of an unrepeatable era. Produced between 1982 and 1984, it was the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the World Rally Championship, claiming the constructors’ title in 1983 by defeating the formidable all-wheel-drive Audi Quattro.
Derived from the Lancia Beta Montecarlo, the 037 was developed by Abarth in collaboration with Pininfarina and Dallara. It featured a lightweight steel and Kevlar chassis, advanced suspension, and a mid-mounted 2.0-liter engine supercharged with a roots-type compressor (instead of a turbo) for immediate throttle response at low revs.
With around 280 hp in its racing version (and more in later evolutions), the Lancia 037 excelled in agility, balance, and precision—key qualities for tarmac rally stages. Despite the technical disadvantage compared to AWD rivals, the skill of drivers like Walter Röhrl and Markku Alén, combined with refined engineering, made the difference.
Only 207 units were built for Group B homologation. Today, the Lancia 037 is an absolute motorsport icon, admired for its beauty, technical bravery, and its historic victory over all-wheel-drive competitors.
