The Ferrari 250 P of 1963 represents a historic turning point for the Maranello manufacturer and for endurance racing. Designed under the direction of Mauro Forghieri, it was the first Ferrari prototype to feature a mid-rear engine layout, a bold technical choice that marked the definitive move away from front-engined cars in top-level competition.
The chassis was light and rigid, clothed in an aerodynamic aluminum body, while its heart was a 3-liter V12, derived from Ferrari tradition, producing over 300 horsepower.
The 250 P made its debut in the 1963 World Sportscar Championship, immediately proving its speed and reliability. The highlight of its career came at the 24 Hours of Le Mans that same year, where Lorenzo Bandini and Ludovico Scarfiotti secured overall victory.
It was a historic achievement: Ferrari’s first Le Mans win with a mid-engined car, and the first overall victory for a prototype of this configuration in the famous French endurance race.
The Ferrari 250 P was not only a winning car, but also a symbol of innovation, technical courage, and forward-looking vision, paving the way for Ferrari’s future prototypes and leaving an enduring legacy in the history of motorsport.
