The Dino 206 S Competizione stands as one of Pininfarina’s most remarkable concept cars. Viewed from above, its flowing outline resembles the shape of a violin—an image often recalled by its designer, Paolo Martin, who has described seeing the car as feeling like playing that elegant instrument once again. Better known among enthusiasts as the “Yellow Dino,” the project originated from Enzo Ferrari’s vision of creating a road-going supercar inspired directly by racing technology and engineering.
The prototype made its public debut at the 1967 Frankfurt Motor Show, shortly before the production launch of the Dino 206 GT. At the time, Paolo Martin had only recently joined Pininfarina after gaining experience at Michelotti and Bertone, yet he had already established himself as one of Italy’s most promising young automotive designers.
Martin’s creative process combined traditional artistry with sculptural craftsmanship. The project began with hand-drawn pencil sketches, followed by full-colour renderings and detailed 1:10 scale drawings. These were transformed into a physical 1:10 wooden model, carved by Martin himself from Swiss pine on the balcony of his home. He often described this unique approach as creating “three-dimensional sketches,” allowing the design to evolve naturally through volume as well as line.
The concept was built around the chassis of the Dino 206 S racing car, a limited-production competition model constructed in just eighteen examples, primarily for private racing teams. This lightweight racing platform had already proven itself on the international stage, including participation in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside Ferrari’s legendary 330 P3 prototypes. The result was an exceptionally advanced design that blended racing-derived engineering with breathtaking styling, earning widespread acclaim and becoming one of Pininfarina’s most celebrated concept cars.
